Micromechanical modelling of the elastic-viscoplastic response of metallic alloys under rapid compression in the semi-solid state
Semi-solid processing is an innovative manufacturing process gaining increasing commercial application worldwide. Accurate modelling of die fill is important to reduce trial and error in die design. This is joint work on validating a micromechanical model which has the capacity for modelling the extremely complex semi-solid behaviour. It was initiated through a Royal Society Visiting Researcher Award for Favier and continued through a Visiting Professor appointment for Atkinson in France. It has shown what had never previously been suspected; that there is an elastic contribution to the initial behaviour. The results have wider significance for granular systems.
