Additional information

Atkinson is recognised internationally in semi-solid processing through visiting professorships (France, China), an honorary degree (Belgium), the Lee Hsun Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenyang, and 4 plenaries in the REF period. This paper is part of the body of work that has led to these honours. It draws together data on microstructural coarsening in the semi-solid state from a wide variety of sources to achieve a coherent analysis. Controlling coarsening is important for the mechanical properties. Conventionally wrought route aluminium alloys coarsen much more slowly than conventionally cast and the work strengthens the potential for control.
