Stimulus and network dynamics collide in a ratiometric model of the antennal lobe macroglomerular complex.
This computational study came out of a four-way EU funded project AMOTH (€2.2M) to translate our understanding of olfactory processing and behaviours in insects over to technologies for advanced chemical sensing and search. It focuses on understanding the relationship between network and naturalistic stimulus dynamics for encoding blends. By showing how these dynamics collide and confound the coding of specific blends, it allows us to build chemical detectors with improved performance to complex naturalistic stimuli. Our results also infer that new approaches may be required to account for the relationship between olfactory network and stimulus dynamics in the brain.
