Additional information

The product formulation and process design that follows the discovery of a new active pharmaceutical ingredient is based on empirical approaches due to lack of mechanistic models for powder flow and compaction. Contact laws between particles form the basis of the Discrete Element Modelling which is used widely in science and engineering. The paper provides new insight into the interactions between particles. This was made possible by the implementation of the material point method (a novel finite element based method) and the development of a multi-scale modelling strategy to include the adhesion force calculated using inter-atomic potentials.
