The effect of processing parameters on pharmaceutical tablet properties
The product formulation and process design that follows the discovery of a new active pharmaceutical ingredient is based on empirical approaches due to lack of mechanistic models for powder flow and compaction. This paper provides an analysis of material property – process parameter relationships integrating for the first time two consecutive operations used in pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing: die fill and compaction. The research is being followed up by an on-going PhD project concerning the behaviour of granular materials under low confinement and a further competitive PhD studentship funded by the University on modelling the flow of powders for pharmaceutical processing.
