ICH-1: Conventional varactor-tuned microwave filters exhibit very high losses and poor intermodulation performance, owing to the presence of lossy non-linear varactors within the filter resonators. We overcame these problems using a switched delay line approach, where the non-linear elements are in the filter couplings, rather than the resonators. Miniature filters were subsequently designed through two consultancy projects with SELEX (‘Novel Filter Design Techniques’ (awarded: 13/08/2008), and ‘Advanced Miniaturised Multilayer Filter Design Technique’ (29/06/2009)). These filters have been integrated by SELEX (colin.bird@selexgalileo.com) into an airborne radar option, which is designed to protect £30M fighter aircraft (see Impact Case Study 1).
