Significance of output:

This paper presents a validated modelling tool to verify laser shock peening (LSP) in the design of highly-stressed alloy components in aerospace applications. An EPSRC-funded collaboration between the Universities of Oxford, Manchester and Swansea. Industrial partners; MoD(UK), Rolls-Royce (John Schofield (john.schofield@rolls-royce.com)), Airbus (Domenico Furfari (Domenico.Furfari@airbus.com)) benefited by having first-hand experience of the technique under conditions relevant to actual service applications. The potential benefits in terms of weight and cost savings in future designs of aircrafts over current designs are very significant. MIC (commercial LSP supplier) (Peter O’Hara (Peter_OHara@metalimprovement.com)) benefited by the development of LSP optimisation tools.
