Significance of output:
Extension in the Earth’s crust is largely accommodated by faults. On the extensively exposed carbonate platform on Malta, direct measurement of displacement, ranging from 10-2 to 102 m, indicates that strain varies with location and scale. The results show that the proportion of the strain that would be resolved by high-quality seismic reflection surveys, as widely used by the hydrocarbons industry, would miss 40-45% of the total extension and that this proportion is greater in low strain areas.
