About Designing: Analysing Design Meetings
This book is the outcome of a project initiated by McDonnell, with all activities undertaken in collaboration with Lloyd (Open University). It comprises an edited collection of studies, including one by McDonnell, of a shared dataset comprising recordings of ‘non-researcher induced’ design meetings in the workplace (in vivo). By successfully negotiating the ethical implications, this was the first time such data had been widely distributed to researchers. McDonnell selected and edited this material and invited selected groups and individuals to contribute analyses on the basis of their acknowledged international standing as design researchers. She filtered the contributions, editing all the resulting (peer-reviewed) studies published in the book, and co-authoring the introductory chapter. The project was part-funded by an AHRC Network Grant (McDonnell Co-I). The studies and dataset continue to be used extensively by researchers in Europe, the USA and Australia. Selected chapters were published simultaneously in two journal special issues.
