Measurement of the inclusive W and Z production cross sections in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV with the CMS experiment

Hays co-led an analysis team contributing to this early benchmark measurement of Standard Model physics at the LHC. As well as directing the work of the group on two of the three methods detailed in the paper for the extraction of the W boson signal, he worked directly, together with his student, on a novel improvement to a standard technique that resulted in a significant reduction in the sensitivity of the measurement to poorly constrained systematic sources of uncertainty.
