Sparta: comparative approaches
This is one of two edited books from Hodkinson’s AHRC research project, Sparta in Comparative Perspective, Ancient to Modern. As project PI and sole editor, Hodkinson’s research contributions included designing the volume’s concept, contents and structure, selecting the contributors, providing detailed critiques of and giving final approval to each chapter. He also made three personal contributions to the book: (i) a 10,000-word Introduction, pp. ix-xxxiii; (ii) Chapter 12, “Was Sparta an exceptional polis?”, pp.417-472; (iii) a substantial individual contribution, “A rejoinder to Mogens Hansen” (pp.480-492), to the jointly-authored Chapter 13, “Spartan exceptionalism: continuing the debate”.
