Special Issue of Studies in Theatre & Performance: Howard Barker
This special edition of Studies in Theatre and Performance, edited and introduced by Goldingay and Mangan, was one of the outcomes of the AHRC-funded project “Plethora and Bare Sufficiency”, which itself was the result of a long-standing research collaboration between Goldingay, Mangan and Howard Barker. This culminated in Barker’s Creative Fellowship, held at Exeter University, which produced two new Barker plays (BLOK/EKO and Charles V) informed by the themes and structural concepts of dramatic plethora and bare sufficiency. The project also generated an academic symposium, organised by Goldingay and Mangan, which informed both the structure and the content of this journal special edition; several of the articles which appear here were delivered in earlier forms at that symposium. The research dimension which informs this output thus includes (a) the original concept and definition of the theme; (b) the creation of the symposium network and (c) a high level of editorial input, both into individual articles and into the composition of the special edition as a coherent whole, as well as (d) the researching and writing of the article and volume introduction themselves.
