An investigation of multiphase CFD modelling of a lateral sloshing tank
Significance of output:
Efficient transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) relies on the ability to predict the maximum impact pressure within the cryogenic tank when the ship’s motion induces sloshing. Safety considerations limit the minimum and maximum fill levels for tanker operation dictating the possible trade patterns. This work identified the necessary physics required to accurately predict the impact pressure when violent sloshing occurs thereby improving the accuracy of prediction by 100% compared to previous methodologies. The work developed formed the basis for the design of a new system for operational support of LNG tanker captains using real-time prediction of sloshing loads (sburnay@bmtmarinerisk.com).
