Significance of output:

This paper provides the first reported scaled physical modelling tests to reveal the push-pull mechanisms of transmission tower footing behaviour and enhanced uplift capacity due to rate loading effects. The role of single footing tests undertaken at an appropriate uplift rate in predicting tower footing capacity is also demonstrated. These important results are being used to develop formal amendments to current foundation testing specifications and design methods via CIGRE technical working committee to limit unnecessary and very costly foundation strengthening programmes associated with the HV transmission line network.
