Significance of output:

Parametric roll describes the phenomenon of large, unstable rolling of a ship. Due to its violent nature and the large accelerations associated with it, there has been widespread concern for ship safety, historically for trawlers and recently for large container ships. Possible consequences include loss of containers, structural damage and capsize. The numerical model described in this paper, applied to the problem through a research programme supported by Lloyd’s Register, is shown to accurately predict the occurrence of parametric roll for a range of ships, demonstrating its use in design and improving their provision of guidance to ship owners.
