This 368-page monograph is the first comprehensive study of the development of books of magic from the advent of writing to the rise of the Internet. It is as much a cultural history of the book as a history of magic. Drawing upon non-digitised manuscript archives and rare printed materials (many of which are unavailable in any UK library) in five different languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish and Danish/Norwegian), it focusses on the development of grimoires in Europe and the Near East, and how through colonisation, slavery, commerce and religion European grimoires were absorbed into cultures across the globe.
