Double-weighted statement

This monograph (c.120,000 words) uses a considerable body of primary sources, including manuscript collections in archives across England and Wales, material objects surviving in philanthropic institutions, and books, pamphlets and newspapers drawn beyond digital holdings. Analysing different genres of evidence in this quantity was time-consuming. Around 85% of the book is completely new for this submission (approximately 100,000 words). Chapter 7 was published in 2004 and some of the material used in Chapters 5 and 6 contributed to a 2002 article. The book’s thesis puts those earlier publications into new historical contexts, providing a distinctive analysis of responses to poverty.
