Additional information

Speech and music use frequencies predominantly below 4 kHz. We present a novel mathematical concept of how these low frequencies can be detected. This work led to the invention of a bioinspired active microphone (pending US patent: US 61/444,358) and has initiated an international, interdisciplinary collaboration with the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm). The work has been presented at more than ten meetings and conferences, and is the subject of an invited review (Rep. Progr. Phys.). It also led to a research grant to Reichenbach of $500k (Burroughs Wellcome Fund #1010293).
