Additional information
A multi-disciplinary collaboration to study the way in which whale baleen derives its flexibility and strength. MicroPIXE performed at Surrey was an essential method for mapping the distribution of calcium and other elements in the microanatomy of whale baleen. This work discovered that the stiffness is provided through a high level of calcification of the keratin fibres in the structure and provided novel insights into the function and evolution of this unusual biomaterial. Future design of nature-inspired materials will learn from this research.
