Italiane : Biografia del novecento

Double weighting is requested for “Italiane. Biografia del Novecento” in recognition of the scale of the research effort associated with the output (approximately 125,000 words) which involved the collection and analysis of a considerable body of material from a wide range of secondary sources in both Italian and English. The research involved many years of archival research and the writing posed important theoretical and intellectual challenges.

This book explores and analyses how political, social, economic, legal and cultural continuities and changes shaped gender roles in Italy over the course of the twentieth century. It also considers how Italian women’s lives were affected by, and how they themselves helped mould, key events such as the rise of Fascism, the two world wars, the 'economic miracle' and the cultural and political upheavals of the 1970s. This is not a translation of the English (Women in Twentieth-Century Italy, 2010) but an improved, extended and substantially original version.
