Additional information

The theoretical framework for this chapter merges two divergent approaches to the literary text, namely a formal study of the play text/s and a performance-based observation of the subsequent adaptation. This synthesis avoids the asymmetry often detectable in performance studies, in which the process of translation from ‘original’ text to performance is neglected. By engaging with the focus and dynamic of the translation process the combined approach offers a useful means of studying literature and dance in parallel. The paper contributes original data to a growing body of work within cultural studies and presents a novel paradigm for dance/literature research collaborations.
