<20>As visualization has grown in importance commentators observed a lack of rigorous theoretical underpinnings. This paper is among the first to offer a generalized and unified mathematical description of the visualization process and the first to formally view visualization at both the extensional and intensional levels. The framework subsumes previous theoretical treatments. This led to invited lectures at Universities of York, Glasgow and KTH (Stockholm) and a talk at, and ongoing development with, Google Corp., (California). It supported an interdisciplinary EPSRC bid with an SME and Psychology to investigate multimodal visualization to aid situational awareness for cyber security. (06/2013-EP/L013231/1, CoI:Vickers).
