Additional information

<21>This paper was the Highly Commended Award Winner at Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence, Emerald Publishing, 2010. This paper is an output of our research programme on social software. The significance of our research is evidenced by a range of related publications in leading international journals (e.g. http://oro.open.ac.uk/19997/); funding from JISC and VITAE; adoption of our guidelines by educators (e.g. Keele University adopted wikis in one of their Computer Science modules), researchers and policy makers. For example, VITAE integrated our recommendations of social software use for research dialogues into their Research Development Framework for researcher skills development and training.
