Additional information

The challenge in extending models for soils with unbreakable particles to soils with crushable particles is to develop simple criteria for the onset of particle breakage, consequential change in grading and associated change in mechanical properties. The work described in this paper helps to provide this link. Adding grading as an extra aspect of state provides a rational explanation for the observed shapes of compression lines for granular materials without the need for elaborate mathematical descriptions. This has been built into models for crushable soils which the three authors are developing collaboratively.
