Briggs-Goode curated this exhibition for the international trade exhibition for fibres, yarns for clothing and upholstery, knitwear and knitted fabrics Spinexpo (ppt:2-8), commissioned by Sophie Steller. Steller developed the commission as a result of viewing the exhibitions held in Nottingham as part of the lace:here:now season of events in 2012/13 (ppt:16-17), in particular Journeys in Lace 1 and Journeys in Lace 2, curated by Briggs-Goode which included work produced in response to the Nottingham Trent University (NTU) lace archive (ppt:18-19).

Lace:here:now (see output 2) demonstrated how lace still inspires creative practice – Journeys in Lace 1 & 2, allowed a range of practitioners (including Briggs-Goode) to respond to items from the lace archive. They included textile artists, film makers and craft practitioners. This curatorial practice has allowed Briggs-Goode to bring textile work that is based in historical enquiry and grows out of the heritage of Nottingham’s material and industrial culture into the material discourse of contemporary commercial and industrial textiles, which was also explored as part of a symposium on heritage and contemporary textile practice (ppt:20).

Spinexpo is the premier international textiles trade fair and the collection developed for it sought to inspire innovative practice by capturing the temporal dislocation it implies – the past brought into the present – by focusing on yarn, structure and aesthetic effect to demonstrate the value of archives for future creative and commercial practice. ‘Evolutions in Lace’ was covered in the press as a distinctive element of Spinexpo (ppt:10-14). The lace:here:now season was reported in the national and regional press (ppt:22&24), as well as Times Higher and Selvedge (ppt:21&23).
