Additional information

This paper overturned conventional wisdom by proving that it is possible to measure directionality in a wave basin by exploiting the complex periodic nature of pseudo-random synthesised sea states. This technique enables replication of true ocean states in a laboratory. The measurement technique developed makes an important contribution to the worldwide community of wave tank testers, e.g. Marinet consortium (www.FP7-Marinet.eu, marinet@ucc.ie), are incorporating the data analysis method. Exploitation of this method is a critical element of the world-leading £10M UK Wave-Current facility, £6M EP/I02932X/1:FloWave TT Ltd (CEO: Stuart Brown (email available)).
