Additional information

Noninvasive methods of monitoring the onset of bacterial infection in seriously ill patients do not yet exist. We describe the development and use of a broad specificity gas sensor array combined with solid phase microextraction methods for preconcentration of trace volatiles, to noninvasively detect volatile biomarkers signalling early signs of bacterial infection in burns patients. The technology and instrumentation developed may have large impact in the future for point of care patient monitoring. Commercial exploitation is currently being negotiated.
