Awarded the IChemE Frank Lees Medal for the most meritorious IChemE publication in safety and loss prevention, this paper co-authored with the HSE, for the first time presents a comprehensive account of challenges associated with the safe and economical pipeline transportation of CO2 captured from fossil fuel power plants for subsequent geological sequestration. This work has led to a number of investigative projects targeting the issues involved funded by the EPSRC (MATTRAN), National Grid (COOLTRANS), and two EC FP7 projects coordinated by the main author (HM) involving collaboration between researchers and industry from several European countries, Canada, China and USA.
