Characterization of the 3-dimensional microstructure of a graphite negative electrode from a Li-ion battery
In order to effectively engineer batteries for high performance applications, it is essential to understand the functional materials on which these electrochemical devices are based. This paper was a world first, presenting the application of high resolution X-ray tomography to explore the microstructure of Li-ion batteries and its relationship to cell performance. Published with General Motors, this paper has led to a formalised funded collaboration with GM and has also initiated a number of collaborations in industry and academia in the UK, Germany and USA. We have also made this data set available to the user community for standardisation
