Additional information

A systems approach for sustainable exploitation of water resources using mathematical programming. Such systems-based, decision-making approaches are of crucial importance to address the growing problem of water shortage globally. Based on water demands and wastewater production as well as geographic characteristics of each region, the proposed optimisation framework determines optimal locations of desalination, wastewater treatment and reclamation plants together with water conveyance infrastructure at minimum annualised total cost. This framework is particularly suitable for water deficient areas as already demonstrated through application to real case studies mainly in Greek islands.
