Ludwig Senfl und die Tradition der Cantus-Firmus-Motette
Following his teacher Heinrich Isaac, Ludwig Senfl is one of the last major representatives of the cantus firmus motet. His completion of Isaac's Choralis Constantinus is well known, but less attention has been paid to the free motets in this regard. This article elucidates systematically the ways in which Senfl constructed motets around a cantus fimus, from traditional (old-fashioned?) tenor motet structures to a freer elaboration of the pre-existent tune in all voices. The article demonstrates how Senfl subverts the distinction of 'structural cantus firmus' vs. 'cantus firmus elaboration' (Sparks) through his ingenious use of hybrid textures.
