Funded by British Council to visit art galleries in Mumbai and understand how they sustain themselves without government funding. This was then used to reflect on how artists and galleries in the UK could sustain themselves amid funding cuts.

The research was conducted in Collaboration with ChatterJee and Lal Gallery and focused on gathering data and personal experiences of galleries based in Mumbai. Mumbai was chosen as it is the economic heart of India and represents a platform for research based on galleries that sustain themselves purely on private investment. In tandem with the research we organised a Rednile Projects ‘Factory Nights’. These events focus on bringing creative practitioners together in unusual and often hard to access spaces. In Mumbai this was the ‘Voodoo’ club, a place of disrepute where travellers can pick up prostitutes. At the factory night some of the key factors noted above where introduced by a Mumbai based social geographer.

Chatterjee & Lal Gallery:

‘There have been few interventions in the fabric of Mumbai’s cultural scene quite so different in nature to the Factory Night at Voodoo. From the gallery’s perspective we were thrilled to be able to invite our mailing list to an evening which genuinely disrupted prevailing assumptions about a given space. Due to the strict encoding of social hierarchies, few of those who have visited our gallery would ever have stepped foot in Voodoo despite the two spaces being tied by geography and history.’
