An edition of Robert Browning's poetry 1861 - 1871
This volume is the fruit of more than ten years of research into the textual history of Browning’s poetry and its cultural, historical and biographical contexts. The three editors worked jointly on all aspects of the volume, visiting archives in the UK and USA to examine and collate manuscripts of poems and unpublished letters; the annotation covers the full range of Browning’s lived experience and wide, eclectic reading. Subjects on which detailed research was undertaken include nineteenth-century biblical criticism (‘A Death in the Desert’), Spiritualism (‘Mr Sludge, “the Medium”’), and the career of Napoleon III (Prince Hohenstiel-Schwangau, Saviour of Society).
