Blaze: Fire Puzzle
Interactive Art, game and mobile app.
Stockton designed and created Blaze: Fire Puzzle whilst Creative Director at Mere Mortals. Mere Mortals is a leading special effects, postproduction and games company in the North East of England working on products ranging from Oscar-winning films thorough to websites and games for the world’s leading publishers. Clients included BBC, Channel 4, Ubisoft, Microsoft, DNA films and the NHS. Blaze is an interactive application for mobile devices. Stockton designed it in 2010 as part of a suite of interactive products for the mobile market. Having worked in interactive and traditional design for many years, he wanted to bring to mobile devices, with their mix of digital and physical interaction, the experience of immersive content. With Blaze Stockton aimed to make the process of discovery and interaction a ‘playable’ experience, and to use movement, light and time to drive the user towards discovery. Building on this, he chose to use light as the key ‘driver’ of the project and to turn the revealing of the shape and form of an artefact into a game. From this, he created an ambient experience around touch and lighting, which used the movement of fire as a tool for revealing artefacts. The journey begins with a single insight, and the user then follows the trail of information revealing more and more to a point of enlightenment. Starting as an investigation into how we interact differently in mobile space to any other, as well as looking at how we understand and appreciate shape and form, the ludic experience was developed by Stockton into a commercial product achieving international success on Iphone, Ipod touch and IPad.
