This paper contains the core results of Garcia-Mayoral's PhD thesis, which won the ERCOFTAC Da Vinci award 2012 for the best European thesis in fluid mechanics (http://www.ercoftac.org/events/autumn_festival_2012). The results have been made available to Airbus through the AVERT consortium on advancing drag-reduction technologies, and can now be applied for future, improved riblet designs (contact Dr Norman Wood, ID_in_audit_file@airbus.com). The paper led to an invitation to present the results at the Center for Turbulence Research, Stanford University, and the offer of a postdoctoral fellowship in the Center (www.stanford.edu/~gmayoral).
