English abstract

This article considers three different but interdependent contributions to literature on the evolving and complex relationship between truth, institution and religion. First, French jurist Pierre Legendre argues that Christianity acts as a meta-religion governing all “simple” religions and as a meta-law relativizing their law. Second, philosopher Serge Margel details the march of Christian theism against popular religion (“superstition”). Third, religious historian Jonathan Smith focuses on the “pagano-papist” polemics within early modern and modern Protestantism, drawing comparisons with contemporary secular and Protestant historians in their treatment of other religions. These contributions are analysed in view of their choices of disciplinary methods.
