Urashima Pre-text. Research based process drama into perceptions of time and use of the pre-text form in professional contexts.
Urashima Pre-text is based on an 8th century narrative from the Kojiki /Japanese Record of Ancient Matters. Devised, performed and applied in the period 2009-2012 in three stages. Firstly, in collaboration with Naomi Shimizu Green (Autumn 2009): HM Prison Manchester (18.05.10); NEC Tokyo (07.06.10); Japanese Children’s Theatre Association (10.06.10); Tokyo Gakugai (11.06.10); Toho Gakuen (12.06.10). Secondly, with Taichi-Kikaku Theatre Company (Tokyo) touring Finland: Theatre Academy of Finland, Tikurilla City Theatre Vaanta, Metropolia University, Kokola City Theatre, Ostrobothnia Arts (02-09.09.10). Thirdly, solo-led participative performance in Estonia (2nd Estonian National Applied Drama & Theatre Conference, Viljandi Culture Academy (30.03.11); British Council, Tallin (01.04.11)); Spain (Theatre Pa’tothom Barcelona, La Neveva Theatre, Girona (01.06.11)); Chester Intensive Intercultural Programme with six EU country partners (17.04.2011); and Finland (Lehmonjaarki Centre, (09.11.12)).
The audience for this three-hour pre-text based process drama included: maximum security prisoners, voice acting students, actors, university lecturers, educators, youth and social workers, business managers/leaders, the public. The research investigation focused on the use of the pre-text form in professional contexts to organise reflection on given phenomena, including ‘perceptions of time in organisational working life’.
