Medicine in an Age of Commerce and Empire (150,000+ words) is the fruit of ten years’ research on a neglected period of Britain’s imperial medical history. This entailed work at 28 archives in the UK, USA, India and Jamaica, and visits to numerous libraries. The amount of primary published literature that needed to be examined for this project was enormous and resulted in a bibliography of 45 pages. Organizing, analyzing and synthesizing this material – much of which had not been examined before – was equally challenging and this has been widely and generously acknowledged in reviews.
