Medieval Violence: Physical Brutality in Northern France, 1270-1330
This project took approximately 4 years to complete and involved the extensive use of archival sources in Paris, Arras, Lille and Abbeville. Altogether, around a year was spent in France collecting and analysing the documents, many of which are believed to have been hitherto unused by historians. Dealing with these sources both quantitatively and qualitatively required careful and time-consuming analysis. Devji also seeks to develop a very particular argument in each chapter, requiring the use of a different methodology in each (from criminological labelling theory, to detailed literary critique, to the analysis of legal codes).
