Additional information

This book grew out an international conference funded by the Fell Fund. The editing was divided equally between Whyte and Zimmer, with both also contributing chapters and co-authoring an introduction. Whyte’s work for his own contribution, which involved archival research in half a dozen cities, was funded by a Philip Leverhulme Prize. Recent reviews have acknowledged the originality of the approach taken here, not just in the individual essays, but in the conception of the volume as the whole. By focussing on the urban experience of nationalism, this book sheds light on the critical role cities played in nation formation.
