This 560pp monograph represents nearly 10 years of research, involving exhaustive work with primary material and newspaper sources in 11 countries (Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Israel, Russia, Poland, Morocco and the USA) and 9 languages. This entailed coordinating the work of some 15 research assistants in various parts of the world as well as numerous shorter research trips. Since this project bore almost no relationship to previous work on German history, it also entailed learning Hebrew and coming to grips with an entirely new set of historiographies. The material was compiled during a yearlong sabbatical.
