Additional information

Aalto University, Imperial, ABB, National Grid and Fingrid, studied the assessment of damping factor of wide-area electrical power transmission grids. While it is easy to determine damping after a major transient event, we devised and evaluated three new methods for determining damping factor from ambient operation. The significance of Imperial's interdisciplinary contribution was to show that methods of multivariate signal analysis devised for monitoring of refineries can cross over into power transmission. Alex Carter (National Grid, Alex.Carter@nationalgrid.com) will verify the importance for future operation of the UK transmission grid. The collaboration led to 1.1M EUR of FP7 funding REAL-SMART PIAP-GA-2009-251304.
