Collision risk assessment for ships
Current unmanned surface vessels (USVs) are semi-autonomous or remotely controlled. This paper concentrates on the design of navigation systems to allow USVs to navigate autonomously. The area is new with very few universities worldwide working in this field. The work reported was funded by the Office of Naval Research USA (contact: Paul Rispin paul.rispin@navy.mil) and has been extended recently with a follow-on project. The research is collaborative with Florida Atlantic University, Virginia Tech., Stevens Institute of Technology (NY), and US Navy. The aim is to have a demonstrator fully autonomous vehicle by 2014 (contact: Professor M. Dhanak at FAU dhanak@fau.edu).
