This paper specifies requirements for server side buffer space and addresses one of the key issues in the performance of VoD system managements. We conducted experiments with MPEG-4 compressed video streams of low, medium and high video quality that allowed us to obtain total buffering occupancy values when the server is transmitting parallel streams. The results present novel contribution to understanding server side requirements, particularly how parallel streams lead to economy of scale due to shared buffering.
