Phase equilibria in synthetic coal–petcoke slags (Al2O3–CaO–FeO–SiO2–V2O3) under simulated gasification conditions
Petcoke, a petroleum by-product is an economic coal substitute in slagging gasifiers. The molten ash mixture resulting from petcoke contains V-oxides which can crystallize and clog the reactor. Current thermodynamic data do not include V-oxides. This paper presents a new phase diagram for Coal/Petcoke mixtures and identifies the blend-compositions to be avoided due to the risk of clogging through crystallization. This paper was awarded the 2012 Spriggs Phase Equilibrium Prize by the American Ceramic Society and the results have been made available to gasifier users in USA that utilize petcoke through the US National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
