Additional information

The main threat to the operation of the UK AGR fleet is from cracking of core bricks with increasing oxidation. Hitherto nuclear reactor operators have adopted an over-simplified linear elastic model to describe crack growth in nuclear graphites. This paper demonstrates that sophisticated 3D models and resulting X-ray tomography can provide mechanistic understanding of the graphite core. This paper led to the development of various successor models which the nuclear licensees have used to underwrite statutory safety cases.
