Additional information

Vardy & Brown’s widely-used models of wall shear stress in highly unsteady pipe flows are founded on an intuitive approximation to the manner in which turbulence redistributes over cross-sections following a disturbance. Collaboration with He and his team has focussed on CFD methods of assessing and improving the approximation. This paper reports detailed experiments to assess the CFD predictions. Vardy was team leader for this EU project (EC Frame 6, C29.30/H 4957 EU Hydralab).
