Additional information

This paper arose from an EPSRC-funded study (EP/D041821/1) and presents new methods for predicting the settling velocity of sand-mud mixtures at high suspension concentrations. Apart from being theoretically more rigorous, the methods are also more general and robust compared with other existing formulations. The results demonstrated conclusively that consideration of the full return flow effects generated by both fractions provides the best modelling framework for predicting the hindered settling conditions over a wide range of sand–mud mixtures.
