Additional information

This is the first paper reporting the damage development in cemented acetabular reconstructs under a combined cyclic

loading block in a saline environment. The work built on a unique hip simulation developed at Portsmouth for fixation testing, one and only this type in the UK. The new development is in a custom-made environmental chamber which allows testing in more physiological loading conditions for the first time. The damage patterns discovered differ from those in dry conditions and more consistent with the clinical findings. Work carried out in collaboration with the Queen Alexandra Hospital.
