The Scottish Book (2012) Editor, Harley A, a limited edition publication of 1000 copies, showcasing past and present achievements in Scottish textiles and funded through a regional knowledge exchange initiative. The editor placed an emphasis on the nexus between traditional craft skills and the development of technical textiles, both are key research areas in the School of Textiles and Design with its own distinctive heritage within the Scottish textile industry. The book also acknowledges wider aspects of Scotland's international reputation, present and historically, in design and manufacture of textiles. The design aesthetic of the book uniquely reflects the craft and technical duality through careful consideration of tactile as well as visual elements, to describe contributions from researchers, design practitioners and the textile industry. Each copy is individually hand finished to reflect the origins of the School and its rich archive that provides the basis of research into 19th and 20th century textile design and manufacture including textile design icons such as Bernat Klein whose work is featured in the publication. The international aspect was positioned through commissioning of the Singaporean based design agency, WORK with whom the editor has developed a creative collaboration evident in the concept and production of the Scottish Book. Since its publication the Scottish Book has been exhibited in the Ginza Graphic Gallery, Tokyo, a retrospective of WORK publications – ‘The Extremities of the Printed Matter’ 3 – 25 December 2012 with an exhibition catalogue ISBN978-4-88752-370-8, and introduction by Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, and video artist Keiichi Tanaami; Selected for the Japanese Directors Club Annual Showcase and accompanying TDC, Vol. 24, a design annual book to present the results of Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2013; Exhibited in Comme de Garçons, Tokyo; And selected for WERK No.20, a retrospective of the portfolio of publications since 2000.
